The photo of Gandhi on this page’s header appears in the yard of the Scholcher Library in Fort de France, Martinique. This is one of the French West Indies islands that Henri Hoppenot (Michael Henry Wilson’s grandfather) liberated on July 14, 1943 on behalf of General de Gaulle and the Free French. Hoppenot’s first speech to the islanders was about reconciliation, an idea that has inspired Wilson throughout his life.
